Analog: Like Instagram On Your Desktop [Review]

New from the folks at Realmac Software is Analog, an desktop OS X application that iPhone photographers will find rather familiar.

That’s because it does a similar job to Instagram and a dozen similar retro-style “instant fx” photo apps that you can find on the iOS store and buy dirt cheap – usually just a dollar or two.

Analog sports very iOS-like controls. Drag in a photo and click on the effect you’d like to apply to it. There are 20 effects on offer, mirroring many of the ones you might be familiar with from elsewhere (black & white, cross-processed, 1970s-ish, color boost, sepia, and so on). There’s also a bunch of frames and borders you can add too, if you like.

It works well enough, and is simple to use. The only disappointment is that the filters are the only image editing controls on offer. There’s no way to adjust them, not even to tinker with the brightness or contrast.

That said, if all you want to do is a snapshot some zing! and fling it up to Facebook as fast as possible, Analog offers a much faster way of getting it done – faster than firing up iPhoto or Aperture. It works on both Snow Leopard and Lion.

Analog is on special offer at $7.99 right now. If you want to see what kind of images it produces, there’s a Flickr pool where you can check ’em out.
