Apple Sets New Record: iPhone 4S Preorders Top 1 Million In 24 Hours

From all the bitching and moaning, you’d think the iPhone 4S was a flop.

But Apple just announced that iPhone 4S preorders topped more than 1 million in the first 24 hours — a new record. No wonder the preorder system was glitchy on Friday morning.

The iPhone 4S surpasses Apple’s previous single day pre-order record: 600,000 preorders for the iPhone 4.

But note: Last year, the iPhone 4 was available for preorder on only AT&T. This year, the iPhone 4S is available on three carriers: AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint.

Judging by the negative reaction from the digerati to the 4S, it would seem no one wanted the device. But it looks like the faster dual-core chip, better camera, and especially Siri, the virtual assistant, makes it irresistible after all. And this is early adopters. Wait till it goes mass market. The 4S is easily going to be the biggest-selling iPhone yet.

Steve Jobs would be pleased.

Here’s the press release:

Digerati be damned! The new iPhone 4S is a stupendous new phone and a worthy upgrade from the iPhone 4. Being twice as fast and having Siri are enough to drive any mobile computer commuter wild. What’s not to like about it? Didn’t come with a pony? I’m getting one as soon as the feeding frenzy dies down a bit.

Apple for life!! Android got nothing on Apple!!

These numbers may not be as good as everyone thinks because the remember the iPhone got 600,000 pre-orders on AT&T alone and now the iPhone 4s only got 1 million so that could be 333.000 on AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint. I would have expected for them to have gotten at least 500,000 per carrier but I think it’s that Sprint and Verizon customers are no longer as desperate for a good smart phone as they used to be. Verizon used to have horrible smart phones before but when they got the first Motorola Droid their customers just couldn’t get enough of them, I personally waited for the Nexus One.600,000 on AT&T in 2010 > 333,000 on one of the three U.S. carriers in 2011

    Yeah: http://www.techradar.com/news/

I must say though I don’t even like the Galaxy S2 (skinned Android) or the iPhone 4s. I just like really good phones and I was hoping for that iPhone 5 but maybe I will get a good Nexus Prime if it does live up to it’s rumors.

  • jdog25

I hate any Android phone that has a skin on it but the Galaxy S2 got 3 million pre-orders.

My choices on phones is either an iPhone or a Nexus.

    What now iphone haters?

I think the 600,000 were in all countries preordered was  available, not only AT&T in the US. And AT&T said it was his most successful iphone pre order ever with 200.000 in the first 12 hours.
So last year 600,000 in the world and now 1,000,000, it’s a 66% rise.
Sorry if my english is not good enough :).

What I am curious to see is the breakdown of this number.  I want to know if what mostly consists of this sales figure.  Whether they’re mostly from current ip4 owners who upgraded to ip4s, or from new ones who switched from other phones, or from new customers from Sprint.

whats funny is, I, too, ordered the vzw iphone 4 back in february but just a few weeks ago, I saw that I was eligible for a full discount upgrade. I was geeked beyond description. I pre-ordered the 4S and am pumped to receive it.
