Okay, we know: even though October 4th now looks solid as the announcement date for the new iPhone, we’ve been burned on these reports before. Heck, we expected the iPhone 5 announcement this month, so how do we know this October 4th is any good?

Well, short of Apple sending out invitations, we don’t, but maybe, just maybe, we can trust former vice president and influential Apple board member Al Gore on the subject, because guess what? He says the new iPhone will be out next month.

Specifically, Gore — who is a key driver of energy efficiency and environmental awareness at Cupertino — said in an uncharacteristic plug, “Not to mention the new iPhones coming out next month.”

Not only is this the first time any one at Apple has directly confirmed the launch of a new iPhone next month, it also is the first time anyone at Apple has directly hinted that there might be two new iPhones coming out next month: the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 5.

Sure, this isn’t any sort of proof of anything until Tim Cook comes out on stage and holds the next iPhone aloft, but we’re more inclined to trust Al Gore’s word on the matter over some random blogger.
