The number of Mac users has tripled in the last two years, Phil Schiller just said at WWDC.

There were 25 million active OS X users in first 5 years of OS X, up until 2007, Schiller said. But in the last two years, however, it has grown to 75 million.

We’ve TRIPLED the number of users,” he said to big applause. “It’s astounding.”

That’s an impressive statistic, but it’d be helpful if they explained how they assess the number of “active OS X users”—whether it’s measured by software updates or whatever. I don’t question the figures, but they’d have more credibility if we knew where they came from.

No, the number of Mac users has not tripled. The number of OS X users has, and that includes iPhone and iPod Touch users – which account for a large percentage of those new users. Certainly a way to distort reality.

I guess I’m a Linux user, then, because I’m sure my Blu-ray player runs on Linux. There must be millions of new Linux users since Blu-ray was launched.

I am one of 50 million. Switched 2 months ago to a 13inch Aluminum Macbook. So thrilled with it and Mac OS X that I bought a 24inch iMac.

A world of difference from Windows.
