If you’re anything like me, you’ll be forever losing the charger for your Apple gadgets. Thanks to this solar powered iPad case, however, you may never need one again.

The LilyPad 2 is an an Apple certified iPad 2 case that is packed with incredibly helpful functions. Not only will it charge your device using the sun when you lose your charger, but when you lose the device itself, it will whistle at you until you find it. Honestly! And it doesn’t stop there.

Made from 80% recycled materials, the LilyPad 2 also provides a great deal of protection to your delicate tablet, with a screen cover that uses magnets to automatically wake your device just like Apple’s Smart Cover. There’s a built-in HDMI output, a stylus pen, a battery backup, a whistle locator and a keyboard stand.

However, all that functionality comes at a price… and not just an aesthetic one. The LilyPad 2 is available to pre-order now from $165 on Kickstarter. It will begin shipping in October, and is available in two tones of black, two tones of grey, green, and pink.

Either this article is misleading or the kick-starter project is.  There is no way any solar panel has enough energy density to make it possible to “get rid of your charger forever.” It just isn’t possible.

It is the headline… The kick-starter page stays 12.5 days of use before charging the case or iPad is needed

Not mentioned in the article is the USB port. This thing actualy has the elusive iPad USB port, approved by Apple.

The sad fact is that solar cells are really freaking expensive, and fancy batteries aren’t exactly cheap, either.

I really love the idea, but do you think it might look kind of thick and heavy? Wish there were some weight and dimensions specs on the site
