Following the launch of the new Mac mini earlier this year, the guys over at iFixit performed their customary teardown and revealed that the eradication on the system’s optical drive leaves room for a second hard drive. In order to make installing your own a great deal easier, iFixit has launched an awesome little kit that provides everything you need for the job.

The $70 kit comes with everything you need to install a second hard drive, apart from the actual hard drive itself, including a proprietary SATA hard drive cable, four mounting screws, four shock-absorbing mounting grommets, a Mac mini logic board removal tool, a 26-piece screwdriver kit, and a ‘spudger’ — a thin nylon tool that makes it easy to do all those fiddly little things.

iFixit describes the job of introducing a second hard drive as ‘difficult’, but for those of you with a little technical know-how who are happy to attempt it, I’m sure it’ll be well worth it at the end for all that additional storage. Once you’ve got your kit, check out the 38-step guide that iFixit provides to walk you through the whole process.

Will you be installing a second hard drive in your Mac mini?
