iOS 5 Beta 6 Expires On September 29, 2011

A Twitter user going by the name of iH8sn0w is claiming that iOS 5 Beta 6 will expire on September 29, 2011 just one second after 8:00 PM Eastern time. Is this a clue that offers some insight into the real release date of iOS 5?

There are a plethora of rumors about iOS, the next iPhone or iPad, and when Apple will hold their next special event  announcing these new products. Most of those rumors suggest that Apple will hold a special event in September and that the iPhone 4S or 5 will be in consumers hands in October along with iOS 5. Rumors about the iPad 3 suggest that it will not ship until the first quarter of 2012.

Do you think this is a good clue that iOS 5 will be announced in September and ship along with a new iPhone before the end of October?

Have we ever known in advance when an iOS 5 beta would expire?

If not, then he doesn’t know anything.

And either way, this doesn’t mean anything in terms of when iOS 5 will actually be released. It’s no different than “iTunes will check for an update on [date]?! That must mean there’s going to be an update on that date!” nonsense.

Side note: it’s 8PM in Eastern Time, which would be 5PM in Cupertino, marking the end of the work day?..

ih8sn0w is a reliable source he creates jailbreak tools. Snowbreeze being the most well known one. Pretty much the windows version of PwnageTool so I would believe what he says.

Umm. How is that possible?   It can’t be EST until November 6. This guy is using a date that does not exist.

Well, there’s still the GM to come after this beta….

    I have a question.
Do u guys also have a problem syncing music from iTunes to the phone ?

OK… SO WHAT would happen if my iOS 5 beta expires??? can somebody tell me what would happen to my phones and everything in it?
If nothing much would be affected, then would i still need to panic?

  • Torrie

As someone has already pointed out, 8:00:01 is 5:00:01 in Cupertino aka time for everyone to go home. To answer the question of what would happen, as my fiance found out in the middle of a phone call a few week ago when she was still on Beta 1, your phone automatically shuts down and go back to the boot screen. She was pissed because she didn’t back it up for over a month.

They will either release a subsequent beta well before the expiration date or the final release.  Each beta has an expiration date, the same happened for iOS 4 and iOS 3

    Isn’t that completely her fault?

  • Tallest_Skil

As a developer, you’d know that. Except you don’t. Because you aren’t.

    So live with it.

Wow! What a difference between Apple & Google.

Apple’s gone thru 6 Beta’s already. May do another 2 or 3 before going golden master.

Google would have dumped the Beta on the users, ala the Xoom, at version 0.0  and let them fare with it.

  • David Porter

I agree. That would be her fault entirely.  It tells you before you download when it will expire.  And why not backup, it only takes a couple minutes at most.

  • imajoebob

If we assume this true (a big IF), wouldn’t Apple be a lot more clever, putting a bogus, later date for it to expire?  That way the actual announcement would have a bigger impact.  It also would give beta testers a few extra days to buy the new OS without bricking their phones as a big “thanks for all your help.”

Since time is, itself, an abstract concept, this is entirely possible.  Until just a short time ago large swaths of Indiana were ALWAYS on EST; they never changed.  8PM EST is simply 9PM EDT (or 6PM PST or 1AM GMT or 5:30AM IRDT).  Standard Time doesn’t cease to exist, it’s simply not referenced by most of the country during DST.

  • imajoebob

Or they could be HP: ship a Beta version as general release, get clobbered for it, fold the division.

I don’t see why Apple or any beta would expire and force you into restoring, they should use a pop up reminder advising you strongly to upgrade to the latest OS.Access your home PC from your Apple iOS device by using the 2X client App from http://www.2x.comalso has client for Android. Voted 20th overall best Android App!

It sucks! I reverted back from beta 7 to 6 because beta 7 screws up the network data settings from the more sensible format, instead requiring the more troublesome profile setup instead of direct network setting entry.. They’ve also broken internet tethering using the WiFi connecting Personal Hotspot
