We covered Google’s new Photovine photo sharing app when it first hit the App Store back in July, but it was initially available only to a select few users who were lucky enough to get an invite. But now we can all join in on the fun, because today Photovine is officially open to all.
For those unfamiliar with the service, Photovine offers a unique new way to share photos — using ‘vines’ to build up a collection of images based on a single caption. Google describes how it works:
A vine is like a constantly growing family of photos connected through a common caption created by you, your friends, and people all over the world. Some examples of vines could be: “What Weekends Are Made Of”, “Secret Stuffed Animal”, “Party People”, or, “Love of My Life”. As people add photos to vines, they tell their own stories about the moments, images, and ideas that define our lives in a way that’s social, creative, and fun.
So, you could start off a vine with a picture of last night’s office party, and your colleagues can add their own images and stories while you all watch it grow.
What’s great about the Photovine app for the iPhone is that it’s unlike any of Google’s other iOS apps. And it’s not that Google’s other apps are bad, but they’re all very plain and boring to look at. Photovine, on the other hand, is elegant, colorful, and beautifully designed. Its latest update also allows you to post photos to Facebook and Twitter, and send invites via SMS and email.
