Someone must use Facebook’s chat system, because the social networking giant just released Facebook Messenger, a dedicated iOS app that allows you to send and receive messages or chat with friends on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. It even comes with push notifications so you won’t miss any messages.

More interestingly, though, Facebook’s Messenger app contains files that hint at future video calling functionality to come.

9to5Mac drilled down into the new app to see if there were any hints about what might be coming from Facebook in the future. Lo and behold, a few choice graphics that strongly suggest video calling is on its way.

It’s not so surprising, really. Facebook recently announced a deal with Skype to bring VoIP calling to their users, so this is just the bare minimum groundwork for a future rollout. I have to admit, though, that the last thing the curmudgeon in me wants is to pull out my iPhone and find a push notification that my 13-year-old cousin wants to video chat.
