While we patiently await the release of Skype for iPad, which was supposed to land last Tuesday, the Skype application for Mac just got a fancy new update that introduces background video calling and group video chat.

Skype version 5.2 adds a nifty new “call control bar” that lets you video chat in the background while you continue to use your Mac for other tasks:

Now you don’t need to switch back to full-screen Skype to carry on a video call. Just minimise Skype and you can still see the person you’re talking to — while you also work on your computer.

In addition to the call control bar, Skype for Mac now allows you to share your screen over group video chat, allowing you to show off photos, presentations, your new application, and a whole lot more. This feature, however, is only available to Skype Premium customers who sign up to a $8.99 per month subscription. Those wishing to sign up can enjoy 50% off for a limited time and pay just $4.49 per month.

To get your hands on Skype 5.2 for Mac, either ‘check for updates’ within your existing Skype application, or download it from the Skype website.

Meanwhile, we still await the release of the official Skype app for the iPad, which was supposed to hit the App Store last Tuesday. After a video was posted to YouTube teasing the app, we can’t wait to get our hands on it.
