iPhone 5 Will Be Big Update After All, Launching in August

Despite recent speculation that Apple’s fifth-generation iPhone will be merely a faster iPhone 4 dubbed the “iPhone 4S,” one source claims the device will be much more significant than we were initially led to believe — and it will launch this August.

A reliable source for Boy Genius Report claims that we can expect a “radical new case design” for the upcoming iPhone — not just an iPhone 4 look-a-like with a faster dual-core processor and a few updated components. While there are no further details on what the device will look like, previous rumors have claimed the device will sport a “teardrop-shaped” case design, which tapers towards the bottom of the device. The source is also quashing that September release date we’ve all been expecting.

Instead of an announcement at Apple’s annual iPod event in September, the new iPhone will instead be announced during the first or second week of August, with its release to follow in the last week of August. It’s unclear whether this will be an iPhone-only event, or whether Apple will bring its iPod event forward a few weeks.

While no report can decide on whether the fifth-generation iPhone will be called the iPhone 4S or the iPhone 5, speculation regarding its new components has been largely consistent: We can expect the new device to feature Apple’s dual-core A5 processor, an 8-megapixel camera, a dual-band wireless chip with support for both CDMA and GSM networks, and increased storage. Some reports also suggest the device will boast a larger, edge-to-edge display.

Personally, I’m confident the next iPhone will be better than we expected — I don’t think Apple has kept us waiting this long just to give as a faster iPhone 4.
