The iOS 4.3 update enabled third-party applications to take advantage of AirPlay and stream content to the AppleTV and other compatible devices. Since it went live, developers have been updating their apps to include AirPlay support, and we’ve put together a list of the top 10 iOS apps that are currently AirPlay ready. We’ve chosen apps to keep you entertained, up to date with the latest news, and even one to help you workout.

iMovie – ($4.99) Universal – Photography

Apple’s iMovie application is one of the best moviemaking applications available for iOS, and its latest update enables users to stream their home movies straight to their AppleTV to show off on the big screen. Designed to work beautifully with a multitouch screen, iMovie puts everything you need to make great movies at your fingertips using your photos, videos, and music. Add themes, titles and transitions to make your movie look like a Hollywood blockbuster, then publish them directly to YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo and CNN iReport.

Vevo – (Free) Universal – Music

Vevo delivers a huge catalog of over 25,000 high-quality music videos from more than 7,500 artists. It includes exclusive videos, premieres, top chart hits, top playlists, and original Vevo music programming – all of which can be enjoyed through your AppleTV for ultimate on-demand music entertainment. Share videos with friends via Twitter, Facebook & email; purchase your favorite music within the app; create and save custom playlists; and lots, lots more.

Discovery Channel HD – (Free) iPad – Entertainment

The free Discovery Channel app for iPad is updated daily to give you access to a large collection of impressive photography, social media, and great content from its award-winning shows. Learn more about the shows and cast members, join chat sessions with show hosts and fans, and browse the Discovery TV schedule to find great programs in your area.

CNN App for iPad – (Free) iPad – News

The new CNN app for iPad is a great source of breaking news, allowing you to go beyond the headlines and view in-depth feature stories and videos. Watch live streams and experience immersive slideshows from the day’s top stories and major news events. Take part in discussions by leaving your comments on each story, share content with your friends, and save stories for offline viewing.

EyeTV – ($4.99) Universal – Entertainment

EyeTV from Elgato uses a TV tuner connected to your Mac to turn your iPhone or iPad into the ultimate portable TV. Stream live TV from your Mac to your iOS device over your home network, and now enjoy the content on your AppleTV. Record TV on your Mac when you’re away from home and watch it back on your iOS device.

Air Video – ($2.99) Universal – Utilites

Air Video is an incredibly useful iOS app that enables you to save space on your device by streaming your movies from your computer. You don’t need to convert them into an iTunes friendly format – just stick them in a folder and tell Air Video where to find them – it will then perform the conversion “on-the-fly” while you’re watching your movie. With AirPlay support, Air Video gives you access to every video file on your computer through your AppleTV – no conversion needed.

MLS MatchDay 2011 – (Free) Universal – Sports

The official Major League Soccer app for iOS means you’ll never miss out on any of the action, with up to 180 games streamed live, individual highlights as they happen, and full-game highlights after the final whistle blows. Access to video highlights is free, but for $59.99 ($19.99 for iPhone-only) you can watch live matches and stream them to your TV over AirPlay – ensuring you get all the action as it happens. Other features let you personalize alerts for your club, access live scores and a play-by-play of every MLS game.

FitnessClass – (Free) iPad – Healthcare & Fitness

Our top 10 isn’t all about entertainment – FitnessClass is an iPad app with a library of over 230 on-demand video workouts that range from 10 to 90 minutes in length. There are seven free classes to try with the application, and you can purchase additional videos from $0.99 to $7.99 each through in-app purchases. Search videos by time, equipment, goal, and individual class. Now that AirPlay support is built in it’s even easier to work out using your iPad – having your fitness videos on your TV makes them easier to watch and easier to follow.

Justin.tv – ($5.99) iPhone – Social Networking

The official Justin.tv app for iPhone lets you watch any of the 2,500 live channels on Justin.tv – browse by category, search for a channel, chat with other viewers, or broadcast your own stream using your device’s built-in camera.

TED – (Free) iPad – Education

TED presents talks from some of the world’s most fascinating people: education radicals, tech geniuses, medical mavericks, business gurus and music legends. Featuring more than 700 TEDTalk videos, all of which can be streamed to your AppleTV, and more added each week. Search for videos by tags, themes, or related talks, and create your own playlist of your favorites.
